Keep Your Wi-Fi Network Secure With These Tips

Broken Key

Staying secure online is important. Failure to keep your information safe could lead to terrible consequences, including your money being taken or your identity stolen. Here are a few simple security precautions you can take to ensure your Wi-Fi network is secure.

Change Default Logins

All Wi-Fi routers will come with default usernames and passwords. These are easy for hackers to guess, so you need to change them. Log into the admin interface and change the default username and password to something strong and unique. It’s advised that you combine upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols to create credentials that are very difficult to guess.

Use WPA3 Encryption

WPA3 is the latest Wi-Fi encryption standard. It’s the least vulnerable network to attacks, and is the most current standard. If WPA3 isn’t available, WPA2 is an acceptable back-up option. Avoid using WEP or WPA, as these are obsolete and vulnerable to security attacks.

Update Your Firmware

Your router needs to have the most up-to-date firmware to be at its most secure. Check the manufacturer’s website for updates regularly and follow the installation instructions if you need to upgrade.

Create A Guest Network

If you handle sensitive information on your network which you don’t want to leave vulnerable to guests, create an isolated guest network. Use your router’s admin interface to make this, and ensure you set a different username and password for it. Limit the guest network’s access to any main devices and network resources.

You can also use MAC address filtering to ensure only authorised devices can connect to your network. This list can be modified any time you like by accessing the router’s settings, but it enables you to keep tabs on who is allowed to connect.
